Patio Door Repairs in Manchester
A patio door that will not slide properly, refuses to lock, or lets in a draught is more than an inconvenience. It is a security risk and a drain on your heating. We repair sliding patio doors, French doors and inline sliders right across Greater Manchester, getting them back to smooth, secure operation.
Most patio door faults come down to worn rollers, dirty tracks, failed handles or broken locking mechanisms. These are all things we can fix on the spot, usually within an hour. We carry a wide range of roller sets, handles and lock parts in our van so you are not left waiting for parts to be ordered in.
We have worked on thousands of patio doors across Manchester, from old aluminium sliders on 1980s builds right through to modern inline sliding doors on new-build estates in Salford and Trafford.
What We Repair on Patio Doors
Rollers are the beating heart of a sliding patio door. Each door panel sits on a pair of roller carriages that ride along the bottom track. Over the years, these rollers wear down, go flat, or the bearings seize. When that happens, the door becomes incredibly heavy to push. You end up heaving it along the track with both hands, and it still judders and sticks. We lift the door panel, swap the worn roller carriages for new ones, clean out the track and adjust the height so the door glides again. The difference is night and day.
The track itself takes a lot of abuse. Dirt, grit, pet hair and debris build up in the channel over time. If you have kids, you have probably found the odd LEGO brick in there. A dirty track makes the rollers work harder and wear out faster. We clean the track thoroughly during every patio door repair, and if the track is bent, corroded or damaged, we can straighten it or fit a replacement section.
Patio door locks vary a lot depending on the age and manufacturer of the door. Older aluminium sliders often have a simple hook lock operated by a lever. Modern uPVC patio doors usually have a multipoint lock with shootbolts and hook locks at multiple points along the edge. When any of these components fail, the door will not secure properly. We diagnose which part of the locking system has broken and replace it. If the entire mechanism needs swapping, we can usually do that in the same visit.
Handles on patio doors get a lot of use, and the internal lever mechanism that connects the handle to the lock wears out. We replace handles for all makes and styles, including inline handles for sliding doors and lever handles for French doors. We match the colour and style wherever possible so the replacement looks right on your door.
Common Patio Door Problems
Here are the patio door issues we get called out to most often across Manchester.
Door is very heavy to slide open or closed
This almost always points to worn rollers. The nylon or steel wheels inside the roller carriage flatten out or the bearings corrode, creating enormous friction. Forcing the door along wears the track and causes further damage. We replace the roller carriages, clean out the track and adjust the door height. In most cases, the door will slide with one finger again once the new rollers are in place. It is one of the most satisfying repairs we do because the improvement is so immediate.
Lock will not engage or handle spins freely
If the handle spins without doing anything, the internal gearbox has likely failed. On multipoint patio door locks, the gearbox drives the hookbolts and shootbolts that secure the door at multiple points. When it strips or jams, nothing engages. We replace the gearbox or, if necessary, the full lock mechanism. If the handle itself is broken rather than the mechanism, a simple handle swap is a quick and inexpensive fix.
Draughts or rain coming in around the door
Patio doors rely on brush seals, compression gaskets and pile strips to keep the weather out. These deteriorate with age, especially the brush strips along the meeting stile where the two door panels overlap. Once they wear flat, wind and rain find their way through. We replace the seals and brush strips to restore the weather seal. If the door has dropped on its rollers, we adjust the height so the seals make proper contact all the way along.
Door jumping off the track
This is more common on older aluminium patio doors with shallow tracks. If the anti-lift blocks are missing or the rollers are set too low, the door can ride up and jump out of the track entirely. It is alarming when it happens and can damage the door panel or the frame. We refit the door, adjust the roller height, check the anti-lift devices and make sure the top guide is holding the door securely. If the track is too shallow to hold the door safely, we can fit a deeper replacement track.
French door not closing flush or latching
French patio doors rely on the slave door being bolted in position before the master door closes against it. If the top and bottom shootbolts on the slave door are not engaging properly, the master door has nothing solid to latch against. We repair or replace the shootbolts, adjust the keeps and make sure both doors are properly aligned. Hinge adjustments on the master door are often needed too, especially if the door has started to drop.
