Multi-point lock specialists

Door Mechanism Repair in Manchester

The mechanism is the heart of your door's locking system. When the gearbox strips, the shootbolts jam, or the handle goes floppy, your door becomes either impossible to lock or impossible to open. Either way, you have a problem that needs sorting fast. We repair and replace door mechanisms across Greater Manchester every single day, and we carry the most common types in our van for same-day fixes.

Multi-point locking mechanisms are fitted to almost every modern uPVC, composite and aluminium door. They contain a central gearbox that drives multiple locking points around the door frame when you lift the handle and turn the key. These mechanisms work hard, and after thousands of cycles they can fail. We have been fixing them for over a decade and know exactly what to look for.

How We Repair Door Mechanisms

A door mechanism replacement is one of the most common jobs we do, and for good reason. These multi-point systems are mechanical devices with moving parts, and they are under constant stress every time you lock and unlock your door. The gearbox in the centre is usually the first component to fail. It contains small metal cogs and springs that wear down over time, eventually stripping or snapping altogether.

When we arrive, we strip the door down to access the mechanism, identify the exact make and model, and fit a like-for-like or compatible replacement. Getting the right mechanism is critical. There are hundreds of different types on the market, and they vary by backset, centres, length, and connection type. We measure everything on site and carry a wide stock of the most popular brands including Yale, Mila, Fuhr, GU, Lockmaster and Saracen.

We also check the condition of the keeps, rollers, and hook bolts around the frame. There is no point fitting a brand new gearbox if the locking points it drives are damaged or misaligned. We make sure the entire system works as it should before we leave, and test it multiple times to confirm smooth operation.

The whole job typically takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on the mechanism type and door construction. We clean up after ourselves, dispose of the old parts, and make sure you are happy with how the door operates before we finish. Every mechanism we fit comes with our 12-month guarantee.

Common Mechanism Faults

These are the signs that your door mechanism needs attention. Catching them early can save you money.

Handle lifts but door will not lock
This is the classic sign of a stripped gearbox. You lift the handle and feel little or no resistance, and the locking points around the frame do not engage. The internal cogs have worn through and the gearbox can no longer drive the shootbolts and hooks. This leaves your door effectively unlocked even though it looks closed. We replace the gearbox and have your door locking securely again, usually within an hour or two.
Key turns but nothing happens
When the key spins freely in the cylinder without engaging the deadbolt, the connection between the cylinder and the gearbox has failed. This could be a broken tailpiece on the cylinder, a damaged cam in the gearbox, or both. We check both components and replace whatever is needed. Sometimes a new cylinder is all it takes; other times the gearbox needs swapping too.
Door locked shut and will not open
A jammed mechanism can trap you inside or lock you out entirely. The shootbolts or hooks have extended into the frame keeps but the gearbox has failed, so they cannot be retracted. We have specialist tools and techniques to release a jammed mechanism without damaging your door or frame. Once we have the door open, we replace the failed mechanism on the spot.
Handle feels stiff or grinds
Stiffness in the handle is an early warning sign. The gearbox is starting to wear, and it is taking more force to drive the locking points. If you catch it at this stage, we can sometimes service the mechanism rather than replace it entirely. But if the grinding is severe, replacement is the better option before it fails completely and leaves you locked out.
Locking points not reaching the keeps
If the hooks or rollers extend but do not fully engage in the frame keeps, the door is not secure even though it feels locked. This can happen when the door has dropped slightly on its hinges or the mechanism has lost some of its travel. We adjust the hinge positions, re-align the keeps, and if needed fit a new mechanism to restore full engagement at every locking point.
