How We Handle Emergency Lockouts

When you call us about a lockout, the first thing we do is ask a few questions about your door. What type is it? uPVC, composite, wooden, aluminium? What kind of lock does it have? Is there a multipoint mechanism, or is it a standard nightlatch? These details help us arrive prepared with the right tools and, if needed, replacement parts.

Our preferred method is always non-destructive entry. We have invested in professional-grade lock picking tools and bypass equipment that allow us to open most residential locks without causing any damage. For uPVC and composite doors with euro cylinders, we can often pick the cylinder in a matter of minutes. For traditional mortice deadlocks on wooden doors, we use specialist techniques that preserve the lock for continued use.

Sometimes non-destructive entry is not possible. Anti-snap and high-security cylinders are designed to resist picking, which is exactly what makes them good locks. In these cases, we drill the cylinder in a controlled way, removing it cleanly without marking the door or frame. We then fit a brand new cylinder right away. We always carry a range of cylinders in our van, including anti-snap options if you want to upgrade your security at the same time.

Once you are back inside, we test the lock thoroughly to make sure it is working perfectly. We also check the rest of the door's hardware while we are there. If we spot any issues with the mechanism, hinges or alignment, we will let you know so you can decide whether to address them now or later. There is never any pressure to buy extra services.

Common Lockout Situations

Keys lost or stolen

The most straightforward lockout scenario. You have lost your keys, or they have been taken, and you cannot get in. We gain entry using non-destructive methods where possible, then replace the cylinder so that the lost keys no longer work. This is important for security, especially if your keys were stolen or lost with identifying information attached. We can provide a full set of new keys on the spot.

A gust of wind, a child playing, or just a moment of forgetfulness. The door has closed on the latch with your keys sitting on the hallway table. If the deadlock has not been engaged, we can usually open the door very quickly using bypass tools, often without needing to touch the lock at all. This is one of the fastest lockout jobs we do.

Lock mechanism jammed shut

Your key is in your hand, but the lock simply will not turn. The mechanism has jammed with the shootbolts extended into the frame. This is a mechanical failure rather than a lost-key lockout, and it requires a different approach. We release the mechanism using specialist access tools, open the door, and then replace the failed mechanism so it does not happen again.

Snapped key in the lock

Keys can snap in the cylinder, especially old or worn ones, or cheap copies cut from blanks that are too soft. We extract the broken piece using specialist key extraction tools, then test the cylinder to see if it is still functional. If the break has damaged the pins inside, we fit a new cylinder. If the cylinder is fine, we cut a fresh key from the code and you are on your way.
