Aluminium Door Repairs in Manchester
Aluminium doors are everywhere in Manchester. You will find them on shop fronts, office buildings, apartment blocks and increasingly on residential properties too. They look sharp, they last for decades, and they resist corrosion better than almost anything else. But the hardware inside them still wears out. Closers lose tension, locks jam, handles snap off, and hinges bind up.
We specialise in getting aluminium doors working properly again. Whether it is a single residential entrance or a set of commercial shopfront doors, we carry the parts and have the experience to get the job done quickly. We work with all the major aluminium systems including Kawneer, Technal, Smart Systems, Jack Aluminium and Schuco.
What We Repair on Aluminium Doors
Door closers are the single biggest reason people ring us about their aluminium doors. Every commercial aluminium door has an overhead closer, and they take a battering. In a busy shop or office, that closer might cycle hundreds of times a day. Eventually the hydraulic fluid leaks out, the arm bends, or the speed adjustment screws strip. The door either slams shut hard enough to rattle the glass or it drifts open and will not stay closed. We replace closers from Dorma, Briton, Geze and other major manufacturers, and we set the closing speed, latching speed and backcheck so the door operates smoothly.
Aluminium door locks are different from the locks you find on uPVC doors. Many use hookbolt or deadbolt mechanisms operated by a thumbturn inside and a key outside. Commercial doors often have Adams Rite style locks or panic exit hardware. We repair and replace all of these, and we can upgrade locks to meet insurance requirements if you have been told your current setup is not secure enough.
Handles on aluminium doors take a lot of punishment, especially pull handles on shop entrances. The bolt fixings that hold them to the door can work loose, the handle can crack at the mounting point, or the internal connection to the lock can fail. We replace handles, reinforce mounting points and fit heavy-duty alternatives where the original was not up to the job.
Hinges on aluminium doors are typically concealed or butt-style hinges, and they are built to last. But they do fail eventually, particularly on heavy doors or doors that are propped open regularly. Propping an aluminium door puts extreme stress on the top hinge and the closer arm. We replace hinges and, when needed, repair the frame fixings that the hinges bolt into. If the frame itself is damaged, we can usually rebuild the hinge pocket without replacing the entire frame section.
Common Aluminium Door Problems
These are the faults we deal with most often on aluminium doors across Manchester.
Door closer slamming or not closing fully
A slamming door closer is usually leaking hydraulic fluid. Once the fluid level drops, the closer can no longer control the closing speed and the door swings shut with force. This is a safety hazard in any setting, but particularly in commercial premises where members of the public use the door. If the closer is adjustable and the fluid has not fully leaked out, we may be able to recalibrate it. In most cases, however, a leaking closer needs full replacement. We fit the new closer, set the closing and latching speeds correctly, and test it thoroughly before we leave.
Lock not engaging or key turning without locking
On aluminium doors, the lock body sits inside a narrow channel in the door stile. If the door has dropped slightly on its hinges, the hookbolt or deadbolt can miss the keep in the frame. We check the alignment first. If the door has dropped, we adjust the hinges or reposition the keep. If the lock mechanism itself has failed, we swap the lock body for a matching replacement. We stock the most common sizes and backset dimensions for commercial aluminium door locks.
Glass panel cracked or misted up
Aluminium doors usually have large glass panels, and when a sealed unit fails the condensation between the panes makes the whole door look tired. We remove the beading, take out the failed unit and fit a replacement sealed unit. We also replace cracked or broken glass, including toughened safety glass and laminated glass for doors that need to meet building regulations.
Panic bar or push bar not working
Panic exit hardware is a legal requirement on many commercial doors, and when it stops working you have a compliance problem. The push bar can stiffen up, the latch can fail to retract, or the external access device can break. We repair and replace panic exit devices from Briton, Dorma and other approved manufacturers, and we make sure the installation meets the relevant BS EN 1125 or BS EN 179 standard.
Door dragging on the floor or sticking
Aluminium doors are lighter than you might think, but the frames can shift over time, particularly in older buildings where the structure has settled. If the door is scraping the threshold or binding against the frame, we check the hinges and the frame alignment. Often a simple hinge adjustment is enough. If the frame has twisted, we may need to repack the fixing points or adjust the threshold strip to give the door proper clearance.
